Yadda yadda yadda. It's possible to buy Apple products based on their cost/benefit ratio, too. As someone who does that, I think this continued assertion that people who buy Apple are simply consumerist tools is tedious and insulting. It surprises me when I see people I think of as rational saying or posting shit like this.

But I love Apple. I've had 3 desktops, 4 laptops, 3 iPods, and an AppleTV since 1996. I actually really, really would like to buy an iPad. And I've defended the higher unit cost as cheaper in the long run from higher user satisfaction for years. Still, I have to admit, sometimes it gives me a little anxiety to wonder when is the optimum time to buy an Apple product. I've been burned as an early adopter, and now I think it's better to wait a a year or so until feature sets get improved before committing.
